Decatur witnessed a tragic accident on Tuesday that ended in the untimely death of a dump truck driver from Huntsville. The incident occurred around 2:10 p.m. on Highway 31, near Alabama State Route 20.
According to local authorities, the victim, a 56-year-old man named Herman Gavin Burwell, was operating a dump truck loaded with gravel. Preliminary investigations suggest that while traveling north on the highway, Burwell lost control of the vehicle, which subsequently veered off the road and overturned.
Emergency services, including Decatur police, Decatur Fire & Rescue, and Decatur-Morgan EMS, responded quickly to the scene. Burwell was transported to Decatur-Morgan Hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival. Authorities are currently conducting an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.
