Community Leaders Tour Planned Expansion Space for Community Music Technology Center

Huntsville, Alabama – On Thursday, August 15, 2024, the vibrant city of Huntsville buzzed with excitement as Mayor Tommy Battle and several city officials embarked on a tour of the Dr. Robert Shurney Legacy Center. This tour was held in anticipation of the center’s upcoming expansion, set to unfold over the next two years. This noteworthy announcement coincides perfectly with the city’s celebration of Music Month.

Revitalizing Community Spaces

The focal point of the tour was the planned expansion of the North Huntsville Library, particularly focusing on the currently vacant second floor. City officials are optimistic that this revitalization project will serve as a platform to introduce teens and young adults to modern music technology while also enhancing workforce development opportunities in the creative sector.

Mayor Battle expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The idea behind it is that we’ve got our own conservatory right here, located on Spartan Drive in North Huntsville. This is where young people can come, learn the arts, and as they learn, it becomes an introduction to bigger and better opportunities. We’re really excited about this!”

A Commitment to Community Engagement

Moreover, Council Member Devyn Keith, representing the district that includes the Shurney Legacy Center, shared his thoughts about the project’s potential. “This is another promise kept to the community that we were looking at unique ways to integrate public spaces for public use. We made a commitment to make this site stand out and be a destination for people from all over the city,” Keith articulated.

Collaboration with Music Industry Professionals

The project aims to create partnerships with local music industry professionals, ensuring the center’s programs remain dynamic and relevant. Huntsville Music Officer Matt Mandrella emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “I think that the professionals, both local and those who have moved away, will potentially return because of this space, making it essential for our community connections.”

As the design and planning phases continue through 2024, construction is projected to commence in 2025. The city leaders and community members alike eagerly anticipate the positive impact this music technology center will have on Huntsville’s youth and the larger community.
