ATHENS – Sunshine and rain seem to have a friendly tussle in Athens this week, as we brace for cloudy skies and possible thunderstorms. If you’re stepping out today, keep an umbrella handy because the forecast shows a 90% chance of rain with morning downpours and scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon! Temperatures are expected to reach a warm 71°F, with winds blowing in from the east-southeast at 20 to 30 mph. So watch out for those gusty winds! As the rain continues tonight, we are looking at a low of 67°F and an 80% chance of lingering showers. Localized flooding is a possibility, so stay safe and dry!
Amidst this unpredictable weather, there’s something truly exciting happening in our community. On June 22, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement as Elizabeth Partner, wearing her signature yellow hard hat, was joined by family and friends at the groundbreaking ceremony for her future Habitat for Humanity home on Brownsferry Road. This is more than just a house; it’s a stepping stone for a family in need, and our local Habitat for Humanity chapter is all set to roll up their sleeves for this cause!
On September 19, the “Carpenters for Christ” group from Lindsay Lane Baptist Church will be bringing their energy and skills to our vibrant city, gearing up for a three-day rapid-build event. The construction site is buzzing with anticipation at 532 Brownsferry Road as they prepare to frame and roof this precious new home.
Jeremy Foulks, the executive director of Habitat for Humanity of the River Valley, expressed his enthusiasm for this project. “This is just another opportunity for us to partner with the community as we work to serve this family who is in need of safe and affordable housing,” he said. He further shared that this is a fantastic chance for Habitat to reintroduce itself to our city. “We’re building a solid network in Athens and Limestone County,” he added, which sounds pretty great, right?
The event will run from Thursday, September 19, to Saturday, September 21. While Foulks mentioned that there isn’t a need for additional volunteers at this time, he warmly invites everyone in the community to stop by and witness the magic happening on-site. “We are so blessed to have them join us in this work,” Foulks expressed, reflecting on the significance of the project. He continued to highlight the impact this build will have: “It will allow us to save resources and funding for future builds, which we are in desperate need for in Limestone County.”
The initiative showcases the heart of Athens, as neighbors and community members rally around a family striving for a better future. As the rain falls and the winds blow, the construction work symbolizes resilience and hope, echoing a message that is always important: together, we can make a difference.
As we keep a watchful eye on the weather, let’s also keep our spirits high for those involved in this meaningful project and for Elizabeth and her family. This is a wonderful example of how our community can unite to create safe and affordable housing for those who need it most. So, let’s lend our support and look forward to seeing the progress made!
