Exciting Events and Pleasant Weather in Athens, Alabama

Hey there, Athens! As we dive into mid-September, it’s looking absolutely lovely out there. Today’s forecast promises a sunny to partly cloudy sky with a high creeping up near 85°F. Perfect weather to enjoy a stroll or maybe catch one of the many events happening around town! As the sun sets, the temperature will drop to a comfy 62°F under clear skies tonight. So, whether you’re planning to enjoy the outdoors or head in for a relaxing evening, the weather seems just right!

Celebrating Our Constitution

Today is an important day for our community as the John Wade Keyes Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, along with Athens State University, is celebrating Constitution Day. Starting at 1 p.m. in McCandless Hall, this event promises insightful conversations and a chance to reflect on our nation’s history. We’re lucky to have Colonel Phil Williams as the guest speaker. With an impressive resume including 30 years of military service and two Bronze Stars, he’s sure to share some inspiring stories!

If you’re up for some pre-speech activities, don’t miss out on the free hot dog lunch at 12 p.m. at Cafe 1822 in the Student Center – who can resist a good hot dog!

Cluster Revival Event

On the spiritual side of things, four local churches – Elk River Baptist, Walnut Grove Community Church, Salem Methodist, and Lebanon Community Church – have teamed up for a cluster revival event. Kicking off on Sunday, September 15, and running until Wednesday, September 18, this is a wonderful opportunity to find fellowship and inspiration. Don’t miss Brother Tommy Polk at Salem Methodist tonight at 6:30 p.m. and Brother Tony Pack at Lebanon on Wednesday at the same time!

Engaging with the Community

Looking to lend a helping hand? The 27th annual Limestone County Week of Caring is underway, presented by the United Way of Athens-Limestone County, running from September 16 to 20. It’s a great way to connect with your neighbors while making a difference. More details can be found on their website.

Upcoming Community Events

Mark your calendars! On September 20, we’ll see the arrival of the 31st annual Trail of Tears Commemorative Motorcycle Ride, which will pass through Athens on the afternoon of September 21. It’s a moving tribute to honor our Native American heritage and will have bikers from across the nation joining in this meaningful ride.

Plus, look forward to the Athens Shred Day on September 21 hosted by the BBB and AARP Alabama at Athens State University from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.. Clear out your old documents worry-free during this drive-thru shred event!

Local Business Celebration

Let’s not forget about the 2024 Small Business Awards happening on September 24. The event, organized by the Athens-Limestone Chamber of Commerce, will take place at the Alabama Veterans Museum at 8 a.m.. It’s a lovely way to recognize the hard work of our local business owners.

Participate and Engage

If you’re looking for something a little different, come out to the Athens-Limestone County Public Library on September 24 for an Evening with Lori King-Taylor, who will be discussing her latest book. And let’s not forget the upcoming Fiddlers 5k Race and Kids Fun Run on September 28 that starts and ends at Athens State University, which is set to showcase our beautiful downtown district.

So, whether you’re looking to learn, lend a hand, or simply soak in the delightful weather, Athens has something for everyone this week. Make sure to enjoy the beautiful skies, engage in the community events, and take part in our local culture!
