Huntsville, Alabama, is seeing an exciting new trend as cannabis consumption lounges begin to pop up all over the area. These lounges offer a unique space for adults to gather, socialize, and explore various cannabis products in a legal and safe environment. One such establishment, The Shop, is led by owner Matt Batson, who ensures that all products sold in his lounge are rigorously vetted through third-party testing. Despite this, local authorities are urging caution among users.
In 2018, the Farm Bill made significant changes to the legality of hemp products. According to Lieutenant Joe Kennington from the North Alabama Drug Task Force, any cannabis product containing 0.3 percent or less THC is considered legal. However, this law can complicate matters for law enforcement during traffic stops. As Kennington explains, they do not have testing equipment readily available in their vehicles. “You know we don’t run around with any kind of forensic testing in our cars. So it’s really hard for us to determine if the THC levels are 0.3 percent or higher or lower,” he said.
This lack of readily available testing means that even if an officer suspects a product might be illegal, they can still make an arrest. Therefore, it’s crucial for consumers to keep informed and ensure they are using legal products.
Matt Batson prides himself on providing high-quality products at The Shop, emphasizing the importance of legality and safety. “Since 2018 they have had a lot of time to develop these products so we have a lot of really high-quality products,” Batson remarked. He continuously evaluates the products he carries; if something doesn’t meet his standards, he doesn’t hesitate to replace it. “Sometimes I get in products that are not good and I don’t trust, and I get rid of them and get new products,” he assured.
However, it’s important to note that even though his products are legal, they can still lead to issues with drug tests. “Most if not all of these products will show up on a drug test so when it comes to your employer, they are still illegal,” said Batson. This is a crucial reminder for anyone considering using these products, especially in relation to their personal or professional life.
The Shop offers a unique experience that sets it apart from traditional cannabis outlets. Batson describes it as resembling a wine-tasting bar. Visitors can come in and sample various products, including concentrates and hemp-derived cannabinoid concentrates, all of which are legal and safe. “We are kind of like a wine-tasting bar you can come in and try the products that we have,” Batson explained, creating an inviting atmosphere for customers to learn more about the benefits of cannabis.
One of the most popular items among customers is the hemp-based product designed to alleviate muscle pain. Batson highlights its effectiveness, saying, “If you come in after a workout and want something for muscle recovery that’s not psychoactive, I’ve got something for that.” This combination of a relaxed environment and targeted products makes The Shop an appealing destination for many in the Huntsville community.
As cannabis consumption lounges become more prevalent in Huntsville, it’s clear that this trend is here to stay. However, both users and law enforcement are navigating uncharted waters. With the ongoing developments in cannabis legality, it’s vital for users to proceed with caution, stay informed, and choose their products wisely. The landscape is evolving, and so should the awareness of those embracing this new and exciting chapter in Alabama’s history.
