In the heart of Huntsville, Alabama, a new sound is echoing through local venues, and it’s all thanks to a dynamic duo known as the Burney Sisters. Emma and Bella Burney, both exceptionally talented musicians, have been making waves in the Indie Folk Rock and Americana scenes since making the move from Missouri to Huntsville. With dreams of furthering their music careers and being closer to the famous music hubs of Muscle Shoals and Nashville, these sisters have certainly set their sights high!

A Passion for Music

Emma and Bella Burney are not just sisters; they’re a powerhouse of talent. Emma takes on vocals while showcasing her skills on the guitar, piano, bass, violin, and cello. Not to be outdone, Bella also provides vocals and plays the bass, piano, guitar, and cajon. Talk about versatility!

Since settling in Huntsville, the talented pair has sprinkled their magic across town, performing at various local venues including Tangled Strings, the grand opening of St. Stephens Music Hall, and the lively Launchpad Fest downtown. Their music draws inspiration from notable groups like The Avett Brothers, First Aid Kit, Lake Street Dive, The Staves, and Joseph.

What’s Spinning on Their Turntables?

During a recent chat, the sisters shared insights on some albums that have greatly influenced their music journey. Emma kicked things off with “The Paul Simon Songbook,” describing it as a source of constant inspiration. She reveals, “When I first heard this record, I was immediately intrigued by Paul’s writing style, and I loved the folksy feel of the songs. It inspired me to dive heavily into writing and work on my fingerpicking skills.”

On the flip side, Bella sang the praises of “Songs In The Key Of Life” by Stevie Wonder. She fondly recalls how this album inspired her to become a better bassist and musician. Bella shared, “It’s always brought me joy to listen to the songs that encouraged my growth as a musician.”

Diving Deeper into Their Favorites

Emma reflected on her strong connection to “Kathy’s Song” from Paul Simon’s album, considering it one of the best love songs ever written. Bella chimed in, expressing her love for tracks like “As” and “Love’s In Need Of Love Today.” Emma elaborated on their deep admiration for the stripped-down style of Paul’s music, stating, “This is probably one of the reasons it’s so inspiring to listen to, because it’s just a man and his guitar creating some of the best songs in history.”

The sisters also reminisced about the stunning artwork of their favorite albums, with Emma pointing out the simplicity of the image featuring Paul and his girlfriend, Kathy Chitty. “The color scheme they used is my favorite part of it; it’s an immediately recognizable album,” Bella added.
