Bill Battle, Former Tennessee Football Coach, Passes Away at 82

Knoxville, TN – Former University of Tennessee football head coach Bill Battle passed away at the age of 82, as announced by the University of Alabama. His impact on college football resonates through his significant contributions both on and off the field.

Legacy of Success

Bill Battle served as Tennessee’s head football coach from 1970 to 1976, compiling an impressive record of 59 wins, 22 losses, and 2 ties during his seven seasons. His tenure was marked by notable triumphs, including a memorable victory over the legendary coach Bear Bryant and the University of Alabama in their first meeting on the Third Saturday in October in 1970.

Playing Career and Early Coaching

Born in 1941, Battle was a standout player at the University of Alabama under coach Bear Bryant from 1960 to 1962. He was part of Bryant’s first national championship team in 1961, showcasing his skills on the field early in his career. After completing his collegiate playing days, Battle began his coaching journey as a graduate assistant in 1963 at Oklahoma under well-respected coach Bud Wilkinson.

Following a two-year military tour from 1964 to 1965, Battle took up the role of assistant coach at the Army under Paul Dietzel. His coaching career advanced when he arrived at Tennessee in 1966, initially serving as an ends coach under coach Doug Dickey.

Becoming Head Coach

At just 29 years old, Battle became the head coach at Tennessee when Dickey left for a position at the University of Florida after the 1969 season. His leadership was evident as he guided the Volunteers to consistent winning seasons, establishing a strong football program in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

Post-Coaching Career

In addition to his coaching accolades, Battle made a significant mark in collegiate athletics business. In 1981, he founded the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), where he held the position of president and CEO until 2002. This venture revolutionized how colleges managed their licensing agreements, benefiting numerous institutions across the country.

Most recently, Battle served as the director of athletics at the University of Alabama from 2013 to 2017, continuing his commitment to collegiate sports and administration.

Remembering a Legend

Bill Battle’s contributions to college football are immeasurable. His legacy stretches beyond just wins and losses; it encompasses his influence on countless players and coaches, his innovations in collegiate athletics, and his unwavering dedication to the sport.

As those who knew him and admired his work reflect on his life, his impact on the game will surely resonate for years to come. He leaves behind not just a legacy of accomplishments but also a community of fans and players who are grateful for his contributions both on the field and in the administrative offices.
