Huntsville Bids Farewell to a Beloved Local Icon, Barry Orth

Huntsville, Alabama – The heart of Huntsville is heavy today as residents mourn the loss of a cherished member of the community, Barry Orth, who peacefully passed away on October 30, 2024, at the age of 92. Surrounded by his loving family, Barry’s departure leaves a void that will be felt by many who knew him.

A Life Well-Lived

Born on February 20, 1932, in Baltimore, Maryland, Barry was the kind of person who brought warmth and happiness wherever he went. He spent his early years in Baltimore before eventually settling in Huntsville, where he created a life full of memories, love, and laughter. Married for an incredible 67 years to his beloved wife, Susie, who passed away in 2020, Barry exemplified what it means to be a devoted partner and family man.

A Loving Family Remembered

Now, his legacy lives on through his dedicated daughters, Pam Orth and Lisa Orth Rogers, as well as his adored grandsons, Weston and Ross Rogers. His special cousin, Lillian Baroch, also shares in the fond memories of the life they built together. Family was Barry’s world, and he dedicated his time and effort to ensure they felt loved and supported.

From the Navy to Chrysler

Barry’s life was marked by notable achievements and service. After graduating from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, he joined the United States Navy, where he was chosen for Officer Candidate School in 1953, eventually serving as a Naval Instructor and earning the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade.

His work didn’t stop there! He began a rewarding career at Chrysler Corporation, diving into various management roles, notably contributing to important projects such as the Jupiter Missile and the SATURN Program. Over three decades, Barry left an indelible mark in the field of electrical engineering, earning respect and admiration from both colleagues and community members.

A Community Leader

Barry’s contributions extended far beyond his professional life. As a committed community leader, he served various organizations, including the American Rocket Society and the Madison County Heart Association. His leadership skills helped bring forth positive changes in local initiatives, ensuring that Huntsville continued to prosper.

A Passion for Music

In his later years, Barry’s love for life took on a melodious turn. After retiring from Chrysler, he devoted himself to music and fitness. He led the “Barry Orth Combo”, bringing joy to various local events and ceremonies with his piano, organ, and accordion skills. Music was not just a hobby for Barry; it was a way to share love and connection with others.

The Last Months

In his final months, Barry continued sharing his passion for music at the Aspire Physical Recovery Center in Hoover, Alabama, where he brought smiles and laughter to both residents and staff. His charisma and humorous spirit uplifted everyone around him.

Words of Wisdom

Barry’s wise words resonate loudly: “Do your best; set goals and stick to them; help others; set a good example; and do what you say you will do.” Those left behind will forever cherish the light he brought into their lives and the invaluable lessons he imparted.

A Meaningful Goodbye

While private family services will be held at a later date, friends and family are encouraged to honor Barry’s memory with donations to organizations he cared deeply about, such as the Huntsville Downtown Rescue Mission, In Touch Ministries, and Unity of Huntsville Church.

Barry Orth will always be remembered as a wonderful father, grandfather, musician, and friend. As the community grieves, they celebrate a life that was truly lived to the fullest, filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable melodies.
