Athens Police Identify Man Killed in Wednesday Night Shooting

Athens, Alabama – The man killed on Wednesday night by Athens police has been identified as Maurice White, a 40-year-old male who suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Limestone County Coroner Mike West confirmed White’s identity and stated that his body was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy. However, West refrained from providing any additional details regarding the events that led to White’s death.

Athens police responded to a call reporting a suspect threatening a homeowner with a gun around 5:30 p.m. on Songbird Drive, according to information provided by the department to WHNT. Efforts to reach Athens police directly for further comment were unsuccessful. Additionally, a spokesperson for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, responsible for investigating incidents involving police officers shooting suspects, stated that there was no information available to confirm at this time.

The suspect reportedly discharged the gun and fled the scene when officers attempted to persuade him to surrender the weapon. Subsequently, officers used a taser on the suspect while he was pointing the gun at them. The suspect was fatally shot around 7:20 p.m., as revealed by Athens Police Chief Anthony Pressnell to WHNT.
