Shining a Spotlight on Small Businesses

Today, on September 24, we’re celebrating our local heroes—small businesses! The Athens-Limestone Chamber of Commerce and the Launchbox at Athens State University are hosting the 2024 Small Business Awards bright and early at 8 a.m. The event is set to take place at the Alabama Veterans Museum and aims to honor and support the backbone of our community—small businesses. It’s a great chance to cheer on local entrepreneurs who strive to make Athens a wonderful place to live and work!

An Evening of Inspiration

This evening at 6 p.m., come join us for a delightful session with Lori King-Taylor, an inspiring educator and author. She’ll be discussing her latest book, “What I Would Tell My Eighteen Year Old Self,” at the Athens State University Launchbox on the Square. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or just someone looking for a little encouragement, Lori’s insights are sure to resonate.

Upcoming Fun Runs

Looking for a way to get active this weekend? Don’t miss the Fiddlers 5k Race and Kids Fun Run hosted by the Athens State University Alumni Association on Saturday, September 28. Kickoff is at 7 a.m., and it promises to be a fun and friendly race starting and ending at the university. It’s a fantastic opportunity to explore our historic downtown area while getting in some exercise.

Supporting Domestic Violence Awareness

Mark your calendars for October 1, because the Crisis Services of North Alabama is holding a Domestic Violence Awareness Month event at 6 p.m. on the east-side steps of the Limestone County Courthouse. This gathering will welcome all survivors and community members who want to learn more. It’s vital that we come together to support one another, so let’s show our solidarity!

Flu Season Ready

Don’t forget to keep your health in check! The Limestone County Health Department is hosting a drive-thru Flu Clinic on October 2 at the Athens Sportsplex from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.. It’s a convenient way to get your flu shot, and it’s free for those with Medicaid, Medicare Part B, or certain insurance cards. If you don’t have insurance, there’s a small fee of $2.

Fun for the Whole Family

Bringing everyone together is important, and that’s exactly what the 57th Annual Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention is all about, running from October 2 to October 5 at Athens State University. Join in on the fun with live music, competitions, and family-friendly activities—it’s ideal for creating lasting memories!

A Celebration of Life and History

Get ready for a walk through history at the annual Athens Cemetery Stroll on Sunday, October 6. From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., explore the rich stories and legacies of those who came before us. This event is completely free, but donations are appreciated as they go toward maintaining this beautiful historic site.

Get Crafty and Connected

For those green thumbs out there, the library is hosting A Rain Barrels for Your Home Landscape workshop with Alabama Master Gardener Dan Pline on October 8 at 11 a.m.. It’s a great chance to learn how to conserve water while making your garden bloom. Plus, who doesn’t love a good DIY project!

So there you have it, folks! Athens is bustling with activities, camaraderie, and opportunities to learn and grow together. Whether you plan to run a race, enjoy a talk, or stroll through history, remember—every small act contributes to the larger tapestry of our community.
