Huntsville’s Legacy of Adaptation: A Look at Allied Digital Printing
In the heart of Huntsville, a family business is shining brightly, showcasing how a strong foundation and adaptability can lead to success over the decades. Allied Digital Printing, originally known as Allied Photocopy, has been serving the community since 1970. Founded by the late Jim Burruss, this business started off specializing in selling and repairing copier machines. Now, under the guidance of his children, Victor Burruss and Natalie Burruss Tate, it has blossomed into a thriving digital printing hub.
A Trip Down Memory Lane
Victor Burruss fondly reminisces about the early days when he would accompany his father on summer trips across Alabama. “It was incredible working with Dad,” he shares. “I’d get up early and hop into his little VW Beetle to travel the state. He was so innovative!” In those early years, Jim found a unique way to cater to his customers, particularly doctors. Every month, he would take his van loaded with a copying machine to their offices, copying statements for patients, a service that was groundbreaking at the time.
A Pivotal Change
A significant turning point came when a friend of Jim mentioned an article about the rising trend of making money through copying services rather than just selling machines. Inspired, Jim decided to shift the business focus, and it wasn’t long before Allied Digital Printing began to flourish. “The response was fantastic,” says Victor. “It really set us on the right path.”
Adapting to Change
Fast forward to today, and the company is still making waves in the industry. Victor explains, “You have to be able to shift with the market and technology.” The changes brought about by digital advancements have been significant, and Allied Digital Printing has embraced new trends. The recent addition of two large color presses marks the company’s commitment to staying at the forefront of the industry.
Furthermore, Allied has expanded its offerings. “The biggest growth has been in our sign shop,” Victor reveals. From banners and signs to magnets and even car wraps, the business has diversified significantly, necessitating an entire new building for this growing sector.
Hands-On Leadership
What sets Allied apart is its dynamic leadership style. Victor and his sister Natalie believe in being involved at every level. “I don’t ask my employees to do anything I wouldn’t do,” Victor states firmly. He’s known for making deliveries himself and helping out with tasks that keep the business running smoothly. “I’m not going to sit behind my desk. That’s 20,000 prints waiting to be folded, boxed, and delivered!”
Overcoming Challenges
However, the road has not always been smooth. Victor reflects on a harrowing experience: “The fire in October 2017 was massive. We lost everything.” Yet, within just three days, they had set up temporary operations, quickly adapting to the situation. They outsourced work to other local companies and kept things moving despite the enormous setback. “It was a testament to my employees,” he adds, proudly recalling their resilience in an overwhelming situation.
Words of Wisdom
For those looking to venture into business themselves, Victor shares some sage advice: “You’ve got to be hands-on. Be involved from the get-go.” He emphasizes the importance of showing your team that you are not above the tasks at hand. Being visible, engaged, and supportive fosters a strong team spirit and can truly make a difference in the business’s success.
The Secret of Their Success
With a blend of adaptability, hard work, and faith, Victor strongly believes, “This is God’s business, and I’m just a steward of it.” As Allied Digital Printing continues to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of the printing industry, it stands as a testament to a family legacy committed to innovation, care, and community.
