Alabama A&M students, parents raise concerns after campus shooting

NORMAL, Ala. (WAFF) – Alabama A&M students and their parents are raising questions after Monday’s officer involved shooting on campus. The shooting was the second shooting to happen around the Knight complex on Alabama A&M’s campus. Officers said a campus police officer encountered a student with a gun before they exchanged shots. That student was hit multiple times and sent to the hospital.

Student Reactions

For other students, this shooting created worry and confusion. “It was very confusing because that happened so close to us,” student Victor Moore said. “We could’ve gone there, and it could have been a terrible situation.” Despite their concerns, some students believe their university is doing everything they can to protect them. “I’m a little worried, but at the same time, I’d like to look at the optimistic side,” student Antonio Adams said. “DPS is out here making us feel more safe, but there’s always a little concern about it.”

Call for More Safety Measures

Parents and students alike believe more needs to be done in the future. Moore suggested more dorm room checks as a good start. “They did them today, and I think that they are trying to crack down more in terms of creating a safer aspect for the living situation,” he said. “I think they’re definitely doing a better job of that. DPS is around a lot more in general, so I definitely feel a lot safer.” Parent Antonee Boykin emphasized that transparency is key. “If there are things going on behind the scenes that we aren’t aware of, we should be made more aware of it,” she said. “If they can send communications that there has been a shooting, then they can send communications about the things that are being done to put security measures in place to prevent things from happening in the future.”

University Response

WAFF 48 reached out to a university spokesperson for comment. They said the university will not be commenting, as the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency handles the investigation into the shooting.

Student Views

Students like Victor Moore and Antonio Adams shared their thoughts on the shooting, expressing a mix of worry and confidence in the university’s efforts to ensure safety. While the shooting has raised concerns, students appreciate the presence of campus security and hope for increased measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Parental Concerns

Parents, such as Antonee Boykin, are calling for more transparency from the university regarding safety protocols and updates on security measures. They believe that open communication is essential in addressing the anxieties of both students and parents.

University Stand

The university’s decision not to comment on the incident at this time reflects a focus on allowing law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation. As the community seeks reassurance and information, the university’s response to the situation will be under scrutiny.

Conclusion

The shooting at Alabama A&M has triggered a wave of concern among students and parents, highlighting the importance of campus safety and communication. As the investigation unfolds and discussions about security intensify, the university faces the challenge of addressing the needs and fears of its community members.
