Huntsville, Ala – The renowned Alabama A&M University (AAMU) has recently put forth for the second time an offer to purchase the campus of Birmingham-Southern College (BSC). The announcement came soon after an accumulated second proposal had been submitted to the concerned authorities of BSC on June 14, with a substantial bid of $65 million, marking an increase from an initial offer of $52 million made early in May of this year.
The previously announced bid entailed a strategic plan to render an investment of $22 million in direct cash, followed by another $30 million allocated towards various construction and maintenance enhancements, which are considered quintessential to initiate full-fledged operations and reopening of the campus premises.
The increment in the bid is derived from an intention to resolve any persisting debt which BSC may potentially be burdened under.
Shannon Reeves, the current Vice President of American Government Affairs & External Relations at AAMU, was reported expressing his sentiments on the acquisition, stating, “If another entity is selected, we will wish them well, knowing that we love the people of Birmingham and we will continue to try to make a difference whenever we can in the future.”
Alabama A&M envisions transforming the entirety of the BSC property into an academic facility, aiming to contribute significantly to the economic development. This proposition is set to enhance the property value of the adjoining neighborhoods.
Among the competing institutions, reports of Miles College expressing their intent via an official letter to purchase the property of Birmingham-Southern College have surfaced. The determination of the sale, the potential owners, and the desired path for Birmingham-Southern College’s future, appears to be heading towards an intriguing conclusion.
