Madison Celebrates Local Heroes: Post 229 Named Veterans’ Organization of the Year

In a heartwarming celebration of service and dedication, the city of Madison is buzzing with pride as the Madison American Legion, Post 229, has been awarded the title of “Veterans’ Organization of the Year”. This prestigious accolade, presented by the North Alabama Veterans & Fraternal Organizations Coalition (NAVFOC), recognizes the tireless efforts of local veteran organizations in making a difference in the community.

A Night to Remember

The award was revealed during the annual Veterans Day Dinner held on November 8 at the Von Braun Center, where laughter, camaraderie, and a deep sense of pride filled the air. With representatives from over 60 veterans’ service organizations in attendance, this event was not just a ceremony but a cherished gathering of heroes, old and young alike.

Proud Moments for Madison

Not only did Post 229 snag the coveted “Veterans’ Organization of the Year” title, but its commander, Colonel (ret.) Larry Vannoy, was also recognized for his exceptional contributions, earning the title of “Veteran of the Year”. What a fantastic night for Madison!

Impacting Lives Year-Round

According to Jean Downs, Vice Commander of American Legion, Post 229, the post stands out for its “strong and consistent presence across the City of Madison and Madison County.” The organization is committed to engaging community members and running various programs throughout the year that truly make a difference in the lives of veterans and their families.

From monthly Game Nights at the Floyd E ‘Tut’ Fann State Veterans Home in Huntsville to bi-monthly Coffee and Donuts outreach at the Huntsville VA Center, Post 229 is about building connections and offering support. Not to mention the monthly Veterans’ Breakfasts and the annual Veterans Retreat, which provide essential camaraderie and acknowledgement of the sacrifices made by service members.

Engaging the Younger Generation

But wait, there’s more! Madison American Legion, Post 229 doesn’t just focus on veterans; they are heavily involved with the local youth, too. With programs that foster patriotism, good citizenship, and respect for veterans, they are surely planting seeds for future generations.

Downs points out that the post actively sponsors programs like Boys State and extends support to local JROTC units, along with assisting Scout troops and the thrilling American Legion baseball team. Their annual Oratorical Contest gives local youth the opportunity to develop their public speaking skills, blending education with advocacy for the appreciation of military service.
