So, how can you savor all the holiday cheer without compromising your health goals? Luckily for us, Healthy Huntsville has the perfect solution: stay engaged, stay motivated, and maybe even add a sprinkle of friendly competition into the mix!
What’s the Buzz About?
Get ready, folks! The annual “Maintain, Don’t Gain” challenge is back! Now in its 10th year, this exciting, six-week weight-maintenance initiative launched by the City of Huntsville and Huntsville Hospital Health System has grown from a small program aimed at hospital employees to a community-wide health effort that’s part of Healthy Huntsville’s initiative. It’s time to gather your friends and family and get involved!
How Does It Work?
This year’s challenge kicked off with registration and weigh-ins happening from November 18-22 at various locations throughout Huntsville. Participants will then check their progress by weighing out from January 2 through January 10, 2025. And here’s the fun part: everyone who completes both weigh-ins will receive a special participation prize to celebrate their commitment to health!
Insight from the Experts
Rachel Murie, Huntsville Hospital’s Corporate Wellness Manager, emphasizes that the goal is not about losing weight over the holidays but rather to maintain your weight. “From now until November 24th, it’s time to weigh in,” she explains. “Just focus on maintaining your weight through the holidays. We’re not asking for any drastic changes… just a simple balance.” Murie encourages everyone to take advantage of local wellness centers and rec centers to keep moving. “Rotating your workout through family-friendly exercise can also make a huge difference!”
A Word from the Mayor
Huntsville’s Mayor Tommy Battle shares his thoughts on navigating the holiday season: “With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it’s tempting to overindulge in all the delicious food and festivities. But by making smart choices, we can enjoy the season without compromising our health or waistlines.” His wish is for everyone to embrace this challenge, enabling them to kick off the new year feeling stronger and more energized.
The Results Speak for Themselves
Over the past decade, participants have successfully maintained their weight, collectively losing over 5,000 pounds — that’s an impressive 2 ½ tons! Can you believe it? Just think of all the holiday dinners where participants managed to keep their health goals intact.
Join the Movement!
This year’s challenge is more than just about numbers on a scale; it’s about fostering a healthy lifestyle and a sense of community. If you’re ready to be a part of it, head to your local recreation centers and wellness centers during the weigh-in periods. Check out their schedules to make sure you don’t miss out!

For those looking to add some physical activity to the mix, participating locations offer fitness options.
