Exciting Times for Music in Huntsville
Huntsville, Alabama, has been buzzing lately with a whole lot of musical energy, and at the heart of it all is Evan Billiter. For the past ten years, this passionate music lover has been the President of the Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation. Not only has Evan led the foundation, but he’s also been behind so many unforgettable shows through Concerts on the Dock and Straight to Ale. And just this year, he took a big leap by opening up St. Stephens Music Hall with his buddy John Chamness. Talk about keeping the local music scene alive!
A Dive into Music
Recently, Evan took some time to share with us the magic of music and what inspires him. He’s got an incredible taste in tunes and, believe it or not, he had a touching experience that changed how he sees music today. When asked about his favorite album, Evan jumped right in with Paul Simon’s Graceland. “That’s a tough question!” he exclaimed, “but just thinking about that album brings a rush of emotions.”
He explained that the harmonies found in “Graceland” are like a representation of unity and chemistry. During his high school days, Evan had a sheltered upbringing, limited to what he could listen to. That all changed when he moved out and was introduced to a whole new world of music by friends of his sister. From the powerful sounds of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young to the harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel, Evan found himself immersed in the rich layers of music that shaped his love for it.
Why Graceland Stands Out
So, why is Graceland so special? As Evan reflects, “It’s more than just the songs; it’s those incredible voices and the blend of African instruments that create a unique sound.” He couldn’t help but gush over standout tracks like “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes,” calling it one of the greatest songs ever. And let’s not forget about “You Can Call Me Al,” which he jokingly points out is reminiscent of a classic Chevy Chase moment. Who doesn’t love a good laugh with their music?
Evan believes that while the album draws heavily on African influences, there’s something almost legendary about its artwork, evoking feelings reminiscent of King Arthur. It’s that intriguing mix of cultures and sounds that makes this album essential listening.
