Huntsville Residents Face Upcoming Trash Rate Increase

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Starting January 1, 2025, folks in Huntsville are going to see a rise in their trash collection service rates. This change comes after the City Council approved a rate increase earlier this week, which also includes hikes in Huntsville Utilities rates. This decision marks the first time in nearly 15 years that there has been an adjustment to these costs and the second time since 1999. That’s quite a while!

Why the Increase?

According to Chris McNeese, the Director of Public Works, the City has done its best to hold off on raising rates over the years. However, he emphasized that “the time has come when we can’t delay this any longer.” He mentioned that the cost of providing vital services, including sanitation, has risen significantly, and it’s beginning to impact their ability to deliver the services that residents rely on. “Our sanitation department works hard and takes great pride in meeting the needs of residents,” he added, reinforcing that the increase aims to continue the quality of service that the community has come to expect.

What’s the New Rate Structure?

So, what can residents expect with this new rate? Here’s the breakdown:

  • Residential Rates: Currently at $16.50 per month, the rate will jump to $21.50 in January 2025. Additionally, it’s set to increase to $24.50 on January 1, 2027, and further to $27.50 on January 1, 2029.
  • Extra Cans: For those needing extra cans, the cost will rise from $3 per can per month to $9 starting in January 2025, then $12 in 2027, and finally $15 in 2029.
  • Low-Income Customers: Good news for qualified low-income households! Their rates will remain steady at $10 per month. However, the rates for extra cans will also increase, from $3 to $6 per month in January, $9 in 2027, and $11 in 2029.
  • Commercial Standard Rates: These will go up from $29 per month to $37 in January 2025, $41 in 2027, and $45 in 2029.
  • Bulk Waste Charges: For those with excessive bulk waste, the charge will rise from $45 per five cubic yards over to $55 starting January 2025, with further increases planned for 2027 and 2029.

A Closer Look at Trash Collection Services

How exactly does Huntsville manage its trash collection? The city operates a fleet of 25 daily trash collection routes with another 25 specialized boom trucks assisting in the pickup of yard debris, empty boxes, and other curbside items. This thorough approach ensures that the city runs as smoothly as possible when it comes to waste management.

Final Thoughts

As 2025 approaches, residents will need to adjust their budgets to accommodate these increases. While it may be a tough pill to swallow, the City Council and Public Works Department are committed to ensuring high-quality services are maintained. As in any growing city, expenses can fluctuate, and Huntsville is no exception. Here’s hoping that the residents understand the necessity of the changes to continue enjoying a clean and well-maintained community!
