Huntsville Family Grieves and Seeks Justice After Tragic Loss

In the heart of Huntsville, a loving family is feeling the weight of unimaginable loss as they mourn the death of their vibrant 24-year-old daughter, Hannah Parton, who tragically lost her life in a devastating drunk driving incident in 2021. The pain buried deep in their hearts is still fresh, as they navigate a complicated legal journey that has left them feeling frustrated and powerless.

The accused, Jacob Scott Stephens, who has been charged with two counts of reckless murder and first-degree assault, is currently out on bond. Authorities allege that he was driving under the influence when he collided with Hannah and a second victim, Arlene Velasques, 47, and injured five others in the process. The impact of that fateful night looms large over Hannah’s family, especially knowing that her alleged killer is still allowed to drive on the same roads she used to travel routinely.

A Mother’s Grief

Hannah’s mother, Sheila Smith, speaks with a heavy heart, expressing her anguish over the situation. “This person still has a driver’s license and is able to live their life,” she says, her voice trembling with emotion. “I have to go to Maple Hill Cemetery if I want to be as close to her as possible.” While Sheila appreciates the compliments about Hannah’s beauty, it’s the warmth of her character that truly shone through. “She was a bright star bringing happiness to those around her,” Sheila reflects, highlighting that Hannah’s inner beauty was just as important to her as her outward appearance.

Tragically, the devastating crash occurred less than a mile away from their home, just a day before Thanksgiving in 2021. “In my opinion, this is as bad as it gets. You’re not supposed to bury your child,” Sheila shared, her eyes brimming with tears. “She was 24 years old; she had a life to live.” The bittersweet memories of Hannah flood her thoughts continuously, making the reality of loss harder to bear.

Frustration with the Legal Process

As the family seeks justice, they are grappling with the slow-moving pace of the legal system, which has delayed Hannah’s alleged killer’s murder trial twice this year. Surprisingly, it took nearly a year for authorities to arrest Stephens after the crash, adding to the family’s frustration. “I’m extremely angry; things need to happen,” Sheila confides. “Disappointed is an understatement.” The emotional toll of waiting for justice is a constant struggle for Hannah’s family.

Looking Ahead

Madison County District Attorney Tim Gann has clarified that for a murder trial, the timeline they are experiencing is not unusual. He reassures that the district attorney’s office is fully prepared for the trial, which is set to begin on November 18th. Yet, for Hannah’s family, every passing day magnifies the absence of a beloved daughter, sister, and friend.

Tomorrow would have marked Hannah’s 27th birthday, a day that is sure to be filled with mixed emotions for her family. “I’m sure most people have forgotten that this happened almost three years ago, but I sure haven’t,” Sheila says, emphasizing the profound impact Hannah had on their lives. “She’s on my mind just about every second of every day.”

A Community Coming Together

To honor their beloved Hannah, the Smith family is inviting the community to join them for a vigil at Big Spring Park on Tuesday at 6:30 P.M., near the gazebo and duck feeding bridge. They are extending a heartfelt invitation to all who wish to remember Hannah and show their support during this difficult time.

In moments of loss, the community can play a significant role in helping families heal. The memory of Hannah’s radiant smile and her generous spirit will remain alive in the hearts of those who knew and loved her and those who come together to honor her memory.
