Huntsville Welcomes Soothing Canines to Its Airport

Huntsville, Alabama, has taken a big step to help travelers feel more relaxed and at ease before flying. The Huntsville International Airport has recently launched a therapy dog program, aimed at calming the nerves of passengers who may be anxious about their flights. This heartwarming initiative allows travelers to interact with friendly pooches while waiting for their planes, creating a more enjoyable travel experience.

The Birth of a New Program

The idea for this therapy dog program blossomed after a successful event known as Therapy Dog Appreciation Day. During this special day, a selection of therapy dogs made a special appearance at the airport, and the reaction from travelers was overwhelmingly positive. Talyn Walton, who works closely with the airport, was inspired by this feedback to advocate for a permanent program that would keep the furry friends around.

Since the inception of the program, Walton has noticed a flurry of excitement among passengers. “People love interacting with the dogs before and after their flights,” she shared. It’s not just the stressed-out travelers finding joy in these wonderful canines; airport staff members also can’t resist the urge to take a quick break to spend time with the dogs.

The Joy of Therapy Partners

The therapy dogs at Huntsville International Airport are part of a larger program called Therapy Partners. These amazing animals don’t just hang around at the airport; they also visit schools, nursing homes, and memory care facilities to spread joy and comfort. Each dog is specially trained to handle large groups of people, helping to soothe individuals during stressful times.

This past month, during the uncertainty brought about by Hurricane Francine, the therapy dogs played a crucial role in calming anxious travelers worried about possible flight cancellations. They provided a sense of security and companionship that made a tough situation easier to bear.

Meet Oreo and Friends

Among the 12 therapy dogs serving at the airport, one standout is Oreo, whose handler is Sherri Lynn. Oreo is a bundle of energy and joy, and he absolutely loves bringing smiles to the faces of those he meets. Lynn describes him perfectly by saying, “Oreo loves to be pet. So anytime he sees people, he’s all excited.” It’s clear that their first interaction is often a delight for both Oreo and the travelers.

Lynn goes on to explain how Oreo gets all wiggly and excited when they enter a new facility, shaking not out of fear but as a sign of enthusiasm, ready to greet everyone. “He’s like, show me all the people! He loves the attention, loves the pets and the treats,” she says with a smile.

Making a Difference in the Community

The best part for Lynn is the simple joy of seeing how much happiness Oreo brings to others. “My job is just to be Oreo’s chauffeur, and he does all the work, and that’s my favorite part,” she explains. It’s evident that both Lynn and Oreo are making a significant impact on the community, sharing love and comforting those who need it most.

If you’re at the Huntsville International Airport and spot someone wearing a green polo with the words Therapy Partners, don’t hesitate to approach them and give their dog a friendly pet! It’s sure to brighten your day and soothe any travel-related anxieties you might have.

In a world where travel can often feel stressful, the new therapy dog program at Huntsville airport is definitely a pawsitive step towards creating a calming atmosphere for everyone. So, next time you’re at the airport, take a moment to enjoy the furry companions that are working hard to make your journey a little easier!
