Construction Begins on New West Huntsville Recreation Center

Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks an Exciting Development

In Huntsville, the anticipation is palpable as construction has officially commenced on the new West Huntsville Recreation Center. This milestone marks the beginning of an extensive year-long project aimed at enhancing recreational facilities in the city’s fifth district. The center, located at 150 Martin Road, will span an impressive 27,350 square feet and is designed to reflect the successful model of the well-frequented Mark Russell Recreation Center.

Mayor’s Vision for the Community

Mayor Tommy Battle expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “This is an exciting step forward in our commitment to enhancing the quality of life across all parts of the city. While this area has seen significant residential growth, it has been underserved in terms of recreational facilities. That’s about to change.”

Facility Features

Once completed, the recreation center will boast:

  • Two basketball courts
  • Two volleyball courts
  • Three indoor pickleball courts
  • Three outdoor pickleball courts
  • Landscaped areas for relaxation and outdoor activities

Projected Completion and Community Impact

Construction is expected to wrap up within a year. District 5 Council Member John Meredith emphasized the importance of the center, saying, “This center will address the growing need for recreational opportunities and help build a vibrant, active community. I’m deeply grateful to the City Administration and my fellow Council members for their dedication and support in bringing this project to life.”

Expanding Recreational Options

Once the West Huntsville Recreation Center opens its doors, it will increase the total number of recreational and community centers in Huntsville to 15. This will effectively complement the city’s network of over 65 public parks, providing residents with more accessible options for health, fitness, and community engagement.

Commitment to Quality Facilities

James Gossett, the Parks & Recreation Director, highlighted the significance of the project, stating, “More importantly, it’s a testament to Huntsville’s commitment to providing accessible, high-quality facilities for all our residents. This center will serve as a dynamic hub for sports, fitness, and community gatherings, helping to create a stronger, more connected community.”

Looking Ahead

The excitement surrounding the West Huntsville Recreation Center reflects a broader commitment to enhancing community well-being through improved recreational facilities. As construction progresses, residents await the opening of this vital addition to their neighborhood.
