More Redevelopment in MidCity Among Five Recent Council Actions

Huntsville is gearing up for significant improvements as the City Council has approved a series of exciting developments during a recent meeting. The focal point of this effort is the MidCity streetscape construction project, valued at nearly $2.7 million, which will undertake major upgrades in the area.

Enhancements for MidCity Drive

The council has teamed up with Bulls Construction Group for this project, aiming to revitalize the landscape between Stax and Sanderson streets. According to the city’s Urban and Economic Development Director, Shane Davis, this project marks one of the final public investments in the long-term redevelopment of the now-defunct Madison Square Mall.

Features of the Project

The initiative will introduce a variety of features to enhance the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the area:

  • New roadway pavers
  • On-street parking
  • Decorative street lighting
  • Concrete sidewalks
  • Landscaping and hardscaping
  • A quarter-acre park named The Point equipped with a pavilion, seating areas, and utilities

Timeline for Construction

Construction is slated to commence within the next 15 days, with hopes to bring much-needed revitalization to the area. Davis noted, “We are almost complete,” referencing the ongoing initiatives that have already seen several commercial projects finished or nearing completion within the Madison Square Mall redevelopment.

Additional Details

The city’s investment in this project also includes aspects of public parking and provides essential amenities for the nearby Orion Amphitheater.

“Apollo Park is the last piece,” Davis shared. “It’s coming along very nicely. It’s approximately 70% complete.” This redevelopment project looks to not only enhance public spaces but also invigorate local business opportunities in Huntsville’s growing urban landscape.

Other City Council Actions

The Pinhook Creek project, featuring the innovative Skybridge pedestrian bridge over Memorial Parkway, is also part of the recent council actions. Other important matters discussed include ongoing efforts to manage Huntsville Animal Services and regulatory issues concerning quarry permitting.

As these projects move forward, the city of Huntsville continues to demonstrate its commitment to enhancing community living spaces and fostering a vibrant environment for both residents and visitors.
