Pullam’s foray into bridal retail came from her family roots. Her father, Robert Young, had a part-time career as a wedding photographer, which inspired Pullam to create a space that offered a “complete wedding center.” Working alongside her brother, Greg, who also was in wedding photography, the duo joined forces to provide everything a couple might need, from bridal gowns to tuxedos, floral arrangements, and even honeymoon planning.

Modern Brides has seen many shifts in consumer preferences throughout the decades. “Brides would come to us to get their bridal portraits made because we were photographers,” Pullam explained. “That’s not something that’s commonly done anymore.” Instead, she has adapted her business model to keep up with changing trends by listening to customer feedback. “We changed our hours, upgraded our services, and made sure we offered better customer service than our competitors,” she noted.

Where once walk-in visits defined bridal shopping, appointments are now the norm at Modern Brides. “After COVID, we shifted to an appointment-only model,” Pullam explained, emphasizing the importance of personalized service. This approach, born from necessity during a pandemic, has led to a higher quality of interaction with clients.

Running a successful bridal business comes with its hurdles, particularly in ensuring a good work-life balance. Pullam describes herself as “a workaholic” and a “perfectionist,” often finding solace in quiet moments at home after a busy day. “I want peace and quiet when I get home,” she shared, revealing how she recharges after long hours of personal interaction.

From dry cleaning to dress storage and repairs—all included in the price of the gown—Modern Brides delivers a full-service experience. “We make it easy for brides by managing all the details without them needing to find other vendors,” Pullam asserted.

The greatest challenge for Pullam has been finding dedicated employees. “It’s hard to find people with a strong work ethic,” she admitted. Despite difficulties, she remains optimistic and acknowledges the hard work of her current staff while continuing to seek those who are equally committed to her vision.
