Construction projects at the University of Alabama campus

News Summary

The University of Alabama has announced a series of new construction projects aimed at enhancing student life, including a Student Well-Being Hub, a military facility, and new pickleball courts. These developments, approved by the board of trustees, prioritize student wellness and community engagement. Set to commence in April, the projects will provide essential services and recreational opportunities for students, ensuring a vibrant campus atmosphere.

Exciting Developments on the University of Alabama Campus!

Good news for students and residents of Tuscaloosa! On February 7, the University of Alabama System board of trustees gave a green light to several *thrilling construction projects* that are set to enhance campus life significantly. With a focus on student well-being, fitness, and community engagement, these developments aim to create a more vibrant atmosphere for all.

A New Student Well-Being Hub on the Horizon

First up, let’s talk about the *brand new Student Well-Being Hub* that’s on the way! This magnificent facility, built by Harrison Construction, will span an impressive 82,500 square feet and carry a price tag of $59.9 million. Located on the Bryce campus, just south of Kilgore Lane, this hub is designed to be a one-stop shop for student services.

What’s going to be housed in this colossal space? Well, imagine having access to multiple divisions of student life all under one roof! The hub will include the counseling center, health promotion and wellness services, and the vital Women and Gender Resource Center. It’s a fantastic step toward ensuring that students can easily seek the support they need for both mental and physical wellness.

Construction on this amazing hub is set to kick off in April, which means students won’t have to wait long to experience everything it has to offer.

Military Involvement and New Facilities

19,746 square-foot Reserve Officers Training Corps facility and student veterans center, with a budget of $12.7 million. Designed by Seay, Seay, & Litchfield Architects, this space will focus on enhancing student life for military and veteran students. Features will include wellness programs tailored for this unique group, a rappelling tower for training, and even a dirt path obstacle course for some adventurous physical activity.

Revamping the Admissions Experience

Additionally, the undergraduate admissions office will be relocating from Houser Hall to a newly renovated Student Services Center on 751 Campus Drive. This renovation, which will take up about 12,800 square feet, is anticipated to cost approximately $1.3 million and is being designed by Chambless King Architects. This change promises to streamline the admissions process and provide better service for prospective students.

Pickleball is Here to Stay!

10 new pickleball courts at the existing Parker-Haun Tennis facility. The cost of this expansion will amount to approximately $1.6 million, funded by the ETF Advancement and Technology appropriation.

Why pickleball, you ask? Well, the sport has been booming in popularity, with students reporting long wait times for existing courts. Vice President of Student Life, Steven Hood, pointed out that pickleball attracts a wide range of students, including those who may not be familiar with traditional fitness activities. With the new courts, students will have even more opportunities to get active, meet friends, and enjoy the beautiful Tuscaloosa weather!

What’s Next?

With all these exciting updates, students can look forward to a fantastic experience on campus that prioritizes health, well-being, and fun!
