The cheerful sounds of laughter and carnival rides echoed through the Redstone Arsenal Activity Field in Huntsville, Alabama, as families came together to celebrate the 27th Annual Oktoberfest from September 13 to September 15, 2024. Despite a few drizzle drops courtesy of Mother Nature, the spirit of the festival remained high, creating precious memories for attendees of all ages.
It all began on Friday with a vibrant opening ceremony. Garrison Commander Colonel Erin Eike and Robert Schumann, the business manager for the clubs of Redstone, shared a jubilant moment as they tapped the keg, officially kicking off the festivity. The crowd cheered enthusiastically, ready to embrace a weekend filled with traditional German culture, delightful food, and lively music.
“It takes a lot of hard work behind the scenes to put on this festival,” said Ed Nunn, Redstone’s new MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) Director, during his remarks at the ceremony. His grateful acknowledgment of various teams, including the Directorate of Public Works, emergency services, and the safety office, highlighted the dedication that goes into making Oktoberfest such a remarkable event.
As families strolled through the festival grounds, the Craig family—their first-time visitors—stood out in their adorable Bavarian attire. Dressed in outfits they had worn at a festival in Frankfurt, Germany, last year, Bethany Craig shared, “It’s been a lot of fun. We’ve had a good time.” Accompanied by her husband Brant and their energetic 6-year-old twins, Tate and Preston, the family reveled in the festival atmosphere, appreciating the careful planning that contributed to such a well-organized event.
The weather turned out to be more forgiving than anticipated, just slightly overcast with a refreshing breeze. “We were afraid, based on weather reports and Hurricane Francine, that this year’s Oktoberfest would be a wash, however, we were extremely lucky,” remarked Stephanie Stone, marketing and special events manager with Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation. Families enjoyed the variety of rides, games, and activities available, and, as Stone pointed out, “that is what it is all about—seeing everyone enjoy themselves and creating memories together.”
Among the happy festival-goers was 10-year-old Abby Shaw, who can’t stop talking about the thrilling rides. “I really liked the Wind Glider,” Abby shared, excitement twinkling in her eyes. Racing along with her parents, Jessica and Joseph Shaw, the family made their way from Springville, planning to also visit the U.S. Space & Rocket Center the following day.
German culinary delights and refreshing beverages flowed abundantly throughout the weekend, promising a taste of traditional Oktoberfest experiences. It’s no wonder attendees couldn’t resist the allure of bratwurst and pretzels while tapping their toes to the live music echoing across the fields.
This festival wouldn’t be the shining success it is without the generous support of sponsors including Woody Anderson Ford, Gulf Distributing, and Coca-Cola, among others. Their contributions were vital in putting together one of the most anticipated events of the year. Nunn expressed profound gratitude to everyone involved in the planning and execution of the event. “You’ve helped us deliver to the community one of the most anticipated events of the year, and for that, I thank you humbly,” he stated.
From circus thrills to dancing to the beat of live bands, the atmosphere at the 27th Annual Oktoberfest in Huntsville was truly something to celebrate. Families walked away with not just filled bellies but happy hearts, cherishing the laughter, joy, and connections made over a weekend full of fun. As the festival wrapped up, many attendees could already be heard discussing plans for next year – that’s how cherished this community event has become!
